Authenticity is such a strange concept. I mean, you’re you. Of course when your fingers are doing the typing or your face is on camera and you’re speaking, that’s all YOU.
But there’s that nuanced difference somehow between when you’re texting with a friend and when you’re typing up a post.
When you’re FaceTiming your family and when you’re alone pressing ‘record’.
That just slight (or sometimes large) shift from being YOU to being a performative you.
It can be so small of a shift, but you’ve noticed it. You can feel it and see it in yourself and in others on social media.
So how do you fix it?
Well, first off, you don’t need “fixing”.
Your message is already amazing.
Your business plan is fantastic.
You’re sharing about things that have the capacity to change so many lives, and the world needs YOU just as you are.
What you could use is a method and a plan to help you move from creating content up in your “performative headspace” and drop down into creating from a more “grounded heartspace”.
It will feel better to you.
It will resonate more with the people you are here to help.
It will flow more easily out into the world.
Here’s my advice:
Social media is meant to be just that: social!
Think about the accounts you connect with most. I bet they’re not the ones monologuing AT you, but the ones that feel like they’re talking TO you.
The ones that give the vibes of voice-memoing or MarcoPolo-ing with a friend. Yeah, there’s a time delay between when they recorded it and when you listened/watched, but it feels like you’re in a shared space having a conversation.
THAT is what you’re going for.
You showing up just as you are (and you are wonderful!).
STEP 1:
Find a content creation buddy. Someone you enjoy chatting with and who also is excited to give more of their message to others.
STEP 2:
Have a chat and record it! Start off with some small talk and get into the flow. Then each person can chat about a few topics that you’d like to share about on your socials.
STEP 3:
Turn your recording into content! A 15 minute recording should easily help you make at least 15 posts/reels. (You’d be surprised how much typed text you get from a minute of speaking!)
I highly recommend Riverside for your recording. The free version is amazing, and it allows you to easily have the video and audio be just you. It also will suggest clips for reels, and gives you a transcript you can download to make your text posts simple to put together.
